In April 2019, Austin Playhouse purchased a 2.8 acre site located at 1717 E. Anderson Lane along the 183 frontage road in northeast Austin. On Sunday, October 6th Austin Playhouse held a private event with its board and company members to reveal the final renderings of its permanent home. Scott Ginder of Forge Craft is the lead architect on the project. Scott presented the renderings and a computer generated animation of the new building.
The exterior rendering highlights the welcoming, glass-front lobby design with views of the patio, bar, box office, and theatre entrances.
The main stage rendering highlights the modified thrust of the 207-seat main stage.
The interior lobby features the exposed concrete tilt-wall design with sustainable bamboo trim throughout to add warmth and acoustic depth.
This welcoming and accessible arts center will serve as a creative hub for Austin artists and provide tremendous growth opportunities for both Austin Playhouse and AP’s partners in the arts. The facility feature two stages, a 207-seat main stage and a 99-seat black box stage. Additionally, there will be flexible spaces for performances and events including a large classroom, rooftop terrace, and outdoor patio. The new space will have full support facilities including offices, scene shop, costume loft, and backstage dressing rooms, as well as 1700 square feet of office rental space.
The building permit is projected to be approved in early November and the site permit should be approved by the end of the year.
Austin Playhouse has already completed Phase 1 of the building campaign by raising $500,000 for initial architectural drawings, engineering plans, a feasibility study and project consultants. Phase 2 has a $5,000,000 goal and includes land purchase, site design and development, and building construction. The final phase of the building campaign is to raise $1,500,000 for the retirement of construction loans.
