synopsis
The Story: It’s Thanksgiving 1973 when Asian immigrants Luna and Jane meet by chance in a supermarket. Back at Luna’s apartment, they discover they have much in common: medical-resident husbands, a love of disco dancing, and a shared sense of homesickness. Over wine and a valiant attempt at a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, they bond over stories from home and dreams of making it in America.
The Scoop: Named by The New York Times as a play to see this fall, The Heart Sellers is a heartfelt, humorous, and deeply human story. Audiences will be drawn in by the warmth and wit of Luna and Jane as they navigate loneliness, identity, and laughter - and build a friendship that transcends cultural barriers. In this intimate 80-minute two-hander, their experience speaks to anyone who’s ever felt out of place, missed home, or tried to find steady ground in uncertain times.
The History: On October 3, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Hart-Celler Act into law, abolishing a quota system that had severely limited immigration from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This pivotal legislation reshaped the face of America and opened doors for families, futures, and new definitions of what it means to belong. The Heart Sellers opens on the 60th anniversary of this transformative law.
Recommended for ages 13 and up for minimal adult language and mature themes.
